Building a Minimalist Home Gym For Maximum Success

1. Stick to free weights.

Simple hand weights can be the most versatile, conforming and user friendly devices. Plus they are easy to store and you can change from one exercise to another in seconds. If general fitness is your goal I would keep the weight selection simple (20,30,40 pounds). Keep in mind that a single 20 pound weight can add 20 pounds of resistance and a pair can add 40 so a pair of weights is really 2 different weights. Other free weight options like Kettle bells, sandbags and even rocks can be used for many exercises with minimal space and cost.

2. Forget the bench, just use an aerobics step.

While a good weight bench is not a bad idea, you can accomplish plenty with a simple adjustable aerobics step. You can incline and decline the step, plus you can use it for jumping, stepping and skipping exercises for stamina or conditioning. It's also easier to move around the room. Unless your back is not able to support itself I recommend you do all upright exercises standing or kneeling. Sitting in an upright position on an adjustable bench simply takes work away from the core.

3. Use a door way chin bar

A Simple doorway chin bar can be cheap, space saving and give you the ability to do chin ups, one of the best exercises on earth. It can also serve as an anchor for...

4. Some Suspension straps.

Suspension straps are relatively cheap, fast to use and very versatile. They can usually work well in a door jam but suspending them from that chin up bar will optimize their effectiveness.

5. Look to do cardio outdoors or use 1-2 pieces of cardio at the most.

In my opinion, no one has ever built a piece of cardio equipment that can compete with simply getting outside. Going for a walk, jogging on a beach, riding a real bike and hiking a mountain are all #1 options for any fitness goal in my book. If a piece of cardio equipment is idea for your needs I recommend no more than 1-2 pieces. Cardio can be the most costly equipment to buy, fix and use. Plus adding more cardio pieces for cross training may have limited benefits. The cheapest and most economical piece of cardio equipment is typically the upright exercise bike.

6. Don't forget the most essential component

One of the most important aspects of any home gym is open space. With some space, you will have more exercise variety with those free weights as you can move freely around the room instead of being restricted to standing in one place. Plus you can use the space for stretching, kicking, doing yoga or just letting your little one roam around. It will also create a less stuffy and cramped space that may stifle the motivation to exercise.
